NETGEAR Nighthawk X6 Tri-Band WiFi Router Review

When it comes to the world of wireless routers, NETGEAR is a household name. NETGEAR is known for their top quality wireless routers ranging from budget options to the high end, extremely fast routers. The Nighthawk X6 Tri-Band is one of those higher end, extremely fast routers. We’ve been testing the Nighthawk X6 for just over a month now and here is our review.

Our first impressions with the Nighthawk X6 came in its incredibly futuristic design. Comprised of a black, sleek metal with sharp corners six antennas flanking the right and left sides of the router, the Nighthawk X6 is an incredibly appealing router. This design statement allows the Nighthawk X6 to stand out among other conventional wireless routers and shows off the amazing design concepts NETGEAR was able to produce.

Functionality & Speed

Design is not the only thing NETGEAR got right with the Nighthawk X6. The Nighthawk X6 is also one hell of a wireless router. Compatible with the latest 802.11 AC wireless standards, the Nighthawk X6 is one of the fastest and least-buggy routers we’ve ever seen. This is due to several factors. First of which is those six antennas flanking the right and left sides of the routers. Those antennas aren’t there simply for design, they also have some impressive functionality built in. Those antennas allow for a tri-band wireless signal. The Nighthawk X6 allows for one 2.4GHz band and two 5GHz bands. This might confuse consumers on the surface if consumers are not aware of how bands work.

Basically it works like this. Most electronics in your household, including some appliances, operate on what’s called a 2.4GHz spectrum. When a person has every device in their house running on a 2.4GHz band, the speeds will start to decrease. With the option of two 5 GHz bands, consumers can take their devices that are compatible with 5GHz spectrum and allocate that space just for those devices. This takes the pressure off other devices and allows for 5GHz-compatible devices to run optimally on their own frequency.

Still with us? Great, let’s move on. The Nighthawk X6 offers two 5GHz bands which can be allotted to devices manually or, by using the companion NETGEAR Genie app, can be set to switch intelligently between the two bands to achieve the optimal speeds. In our speed tests of the Nighthawk X6, we saw an average of 80-100 Mbps speeds for the 5GHz bands and an average of 60-80 Mbps for the 2.4 GHz band. Both very impressive speeds for their respective bands.

The NightHawk X6 is an exceptional router. In our testing it has been one of, if not the, best routers we’ve ever used. It’s fast, it’s convenient, it’s powerful. It’s functionality is perfectly matched by a sophisticated design that will definitely impress your friends. The NightHawk X6 is a definitely recommended and is available through various ecommerce websites including Amazon and eBay. Te NightHawk X6 will currently cost you ~$280 depending on where you purchase it from. We feel this router is worth every single penny in the reliability and the speed of the router alone.
